How much money you need to start a Goat farm? Actually this is a big question actually , if you don’t know there are many variables in raising goats .

The first thing that you should know is the breeds , there are 3 principal breeds , meat breeds , dairy breed and pet breeds.

Only meat and dairy goats are used to start a business , pet goats are kept to the people who want some friends , they are used to make your life happy .

The second thing is the size of the farm , and the quality of goats you plan on buying .

we will talk about the cost of buying and raising 10 meat and dairy goats for small farm , and 50 for big farms 

1-Cost of Start up and raising dairy goats 

Start up 10 goats 

to start a dairy goats farm is more complicated that meat goats , the milk goats needs extra supplies in order to produce big amount of milk . So you will need :

  • A breed of dairy goats: I recommend for you one of those breeds ( Saanen , Nigerian Dwarf , Alpine , Nubian , LaMancha )  those are the best to start a farm and make profit , to know more about breeds check this article :

So the cost of two years old goat ,registered , dehorned , and vaccinated goat my cost up to $400 each ,$3600 for 9 goats.

 A registered and vaccinated buck my cost up to $800.

  • A barn of 200 square foot , the cost of the barn is depend on the place where you live and materials that you gonna use.

For me i built my own barn with a cost of $4000 .

  • Pasture :A pasture of 2 acres with water rights and woven wire fence cost $13000 and more , depending on the area where you live.
  • Milk supplies : including milking machine $100 ,  pail, teat cleaner, filter, and a funnel: $50 , milk stand from the story $300 , used or homemade $100.
  • A Used truck livestock trailer for $30000

Total cost $51950

Raising 10 goats 

  • Food : Including  Hay , Alfalfa , baking soda , and grains , the average cost is $2000 yearly.
  • Vaccination : depending on how many kids you have : MInimum price is $30.
  • Ear tags $20.
  • Health care supplies : Medicines , like iodine ,Bandages for wounds betadine $50

Total cost $2100

Start up 50 goats 

Starting a big farm is more complicated , you will need more space , like 10 times , more supplies you will also need someone to work with you ,but it’s a free choice , if you are able to do it by yourself that’s gonna be great , you will minimize the cost .

So you will need :

  • 40 does , registered , vaccinated and dehorned at $400 each : $16000 .

10 bucks , registered and dehorned $800 each : $8000.

  • A barn of 1000 square foot : $20000 
  • Ten times more space , like 20 acres and a largest  woven wire fence : Total cost $150000.
  • Used truck with substantial towing ability: $35,000
  • Used  livestock trailer: $20,000
  • Used 30 horsepower tractor with bucket: $20,000
  • Milking parlor with milking machines and equipment: $28,200

Total cost $ 297000

Raising 50 goats 

  • Food : You will need 5 times more food  Hay , Alfalfa , baking soda , and grains , the average cost is $10000 yearly.
  • Vaccination : The cost of vaccination 50 goats is including kids : $200
  • Ear tags $100.
  • Health care supplies : Medicines , like iodine ,Bandages for wounds betadine $150

Total cost $10450 

2-Cost of Start up and raising Meat goats

Starting a meat goat farm is more cheaper than Dairy goats , because you will not need milking equipments , but generally you will need the same things that dairy goats need .

This is the list of things you will need to start your meat goat farm with 10 goats:

  • 9 does of meat breeds i recommend for you (Boer , Spanish , Brush , Pygmy , Kiko) 
  • The cost of a 2 years old doe from those registered and dehorned is $300 for each : Total is $2700

1 registered and dehorned buck : $700

  • A barn of 200 square foot , the cost of the barn is depend on the

Meat goats need a specific diet more than dairy goats , you will have to provide for them big and multiple quantity of food .

  • Ear tags $20.

Yes i know after seeing the cost of raising goats , you will have a doubt to do that , you may say is that worth to spend this amount on it .

I will tell you yes , when you want to do something and you believe on it , nothing could stop you .

Raising goats is easiest than what you think , just a few steps , little work and so much love , you will success .

When we started our farm , we had only $3000 , we started with 2 goats we even did not know if they are meat or bread goats . Now we have a lot of animals that i can remember how much they are .

You will get back your money and more in a few time 3 or 4 years , just take care of your goats and try to provide for them anything they need .
